The Royal Marsden is committed to
promoting excellence in cancer research,
treatment and education. It is Europe's
largest cancer centre, with 40,000
patients from across the UK and
abroad seen at the hospital every year.
Founded in London, in 1851 by
Dr William Marsden, with a second site
opening in Sutton in 1963, the Royal
Marsden was the first hospital in the
world to be dedicated to cancer. It has
become a leader in its field, with a
worldwide reputation for innovation
in nursing care, pioneering treatments
and the development of new anticancer
drugs.
One of the country's first NHS
Foundation Trusts, the Royal Marsden
has been consistently awarded the
highest rating of three stars in the
NHS performance indicators.
Their Treatment
The Royal Marsden provides extensive inpatient, day-care and
outpatient services for adults and children with all types of cancer,
including common cancers, haematological cancers and rarer forms
of the disease. The hospital also offers a full range of specialist services
from critical care to rehabilitation and palliative care.
Many clinical staff are leaders in their field and all work as a team with
the patient, planning individual care and treatment. This multidisciplinary
approach to cancer care was initiated by the Royal Marsden
and has since been adopted by hospitals worldwide.
Their Research
The Royal Marsden remains at the forefront of cancer research.
More than 450 clinical trials are undertaken each year to ensure
patients continue to benefit from the latest advances in cancer care.
The hospital recently opened its Drug Development Unit which provides
doctors and scientists with a purpose built facility to research the next
generation of drugs for adult and childhood cancers. The new Unit,
funded by the Cancer Campaign, brings fresh hope to patients as well
as the knowledge their involvement serves as a legacy for the future.
Their Vision
The Royal Marsden strives for excellence and innovation in all its
work. They are proud of their history, but equally committed to ensuring
a brighter future for the one in three people diagnosed with cancer
in their lifetime. For more information about the hospital visit
